Capodanno (da capo d'anno) è il primo giorno dell'anno. Nel mondo moderno cade il 1° gennaio del calendario gregoriano in uso ai fini civili in tutto il mondo, e nella larghissima maggioranza degli Stati è un giorno di festa. Per le popolazioni che seguono il calendario giuliano, ad esempio alcune chiese ortodosse, ai fini strettamente religiosi l'inizio dell'anno viene celebrato nel giorno corrispondente al 14 gennaio gregoriano.
Il 1° Gennaio segna la fine di un periodo, che solitamente inizia il giorno dopo il Natale, dedicato al riepilogo dell'anno appena trascorso, specialmente nelle radio, nelle televisioni, e nei quotidiani, I mass-media spesso, infatti, pubblicano articoli o trasmettono notizie su quanto è avvenuto durante l'ultimo anno, gli elenchi delle persone più in vista che sono morte durante l'anno appena terminato, i cambiamenti annunciati, previsti o prevedibili nel nuovo anno, come la descrizione delle leggi che entreranno in vigore dal 1° Gennaio e l'oroscopo per l'anno che verrà.
Molti la considerano anche un'occasione per fare dei buoni propositi per il nuovo anno; nel mondo occidentale i più popolari sono smettere di fumare, mettersi a dieta, fare esercizio fisico.
La tradizione italiana prevede una serie di rituali scaramantici per il primo dell'anno che possono essere rispettati più o meno strettamente come quello di vestire biancheria intima di colore rosso o di gettare dalla finestra oggetti vecchi o inutilizzati ( quest'ultima usanza è stata quasi completamente abbandonata ). Le lenticchie vengono mangiate a cena il 31 Dicembre come auspicio di ricchezza per l'anno nuovo ed un'altra tradizione prevede il baciarsi sotto il vischio in segno di buon auspicio.
